Matthew Kelly to Speak at MIT/CRE's 2006 Commencement (9/30/06)

Matthew Kelly, Vice President of Real Estate Strategy and Development for Walt Disney Imagineering (WDI), will be the keynote speaker at the MIT Center for Real Estate's 2006 Commencement exercises on September 30. Walt Disney Imagineering develops attractions, resorts, and real estate for Walt Disney Parks and Resorts; and the company was a recipient of the Center's "Visioneer" award during our 20th anniversary celebration in 2004. Mr. Kelly has been responsible for the WDI's Florida-based non-theme park/resort real estate developments. His projects include Celebration, an award-winning large-scale master-planned community and Little Lake Bryan, a mixed use development. He currently serves as President of The Celebration Company.

Mr. Kelly will be the 22nd speaker to deliver the MIT/CRE Commencement address since the Center's inception in 1983. Other recent presenters have included Nori Gerardo Lietz, Managing Director and co-founder of Pension Consulting Alliance, and Dr. Hong-Bin Kang, Vice-Mayor of the Seoul Metropolitan Government and onetime President of the Seoul Development Institute.

Graduation weekend for MIT's Center for Real Estate kicks off with a reception on Friday, Sept. 29 at the MIT Faculty Club. The graduation ceremony itself will be held at the Ray and Maria Stata Center on Saturday, September 30, 2006.

CRE Welcomes Christina Gomes, Assistant to the Chairman / Industry Liaison

Please join us in welcoming Christina Gomes to the MIT Center for Real Estate. Christina is the new Industry Liaison and Assistant to the Chairman.

Christina has a varied and exciting background as a producer, Assistant to the Executive Vice President with Miramax Films, and entrepreneur. As a businessperson she was the owner of a business specializing in organization and relocation. We look forward to leveraging her production, organizational, and administrative skills on behalf of the Center for Real Estate.

Professional Development Courses

The MIT Center for Real Estate Summer Institute of Professional Development Courses helps practitioners supplement their knowledge of the field and learn innovative new approaches. Courses on real estate design, development, finance, and investment are taught on the MIT campus by faculty and industry experts during June and July.

This year, by popular demand, CRE added new courses on Advanced Real Estate Development, Entrepreneurship, and Brownfields. A total of 380 people attended this summer's Professional Development Courses, a 65% increase over last year.

For more information on CRE's Professional Development Courses, please see http://web.mit.edu/cre/conted/index.html.

CRE Seeks Real Deals

The MIT Center for Real Estate hosts a "Real Deals" lecture series, in which an established industry professional presents an insider's look at an actual real estate deal. Our students find the series to be an invaluable introduction to the day-to-day workings of real estate acquisition, development, construction, and finance.

If you would be interested in presenting a "Real Deal," please contact Marion Cunningham at marionoc@mit.edu.

Upcoming Events

  • MIT Center for Real Estate graduation, September 30, 2006:
Our graduation speaker will be Matthew Kelly, Vice President, Real Estate Strategy and Development, Walt Disney Imagineering, a division of the The Walt Disney Company. Alums are invited!

Please see the CRE Events page (http://web.mit.edu/cre/events/index.html) for updates and further information.

Alumni/ae Association of the Center for Real Estate (AACRE)

News and Updates

AACRE Externship Program

Under the guidance of recent CRE alum Abe Menzin (CRE '06), the AACRE is starting a new program. During the January Independent Activities Period (IAP), we will be offering externship opportunities to interested students. Patterned after the parent organization's program, but tailored for real estate, the Externship Program gives students the opportunity to explore companies and new areas of focus within the real estate industry.

If you have a project that you think a student would find of interest or if your firm would be willing to give a current student the opportunity to tour various divisions within the organization during IAP, January 8 - February 2, 2007, contact Marion Cunningham at marionoc@mit.edu.

AACRE Student Host Program Needs You!

In 2003, a current student was the catalyst for the creation of the Center's Student Host Program. The Program allows prospective students to visit MIT and the Center, meet students and faculty, and attend classes. Current students host prospective students and share their experiences and offer advice about the program.

Drawing on this history, the Alumni Association of the CRE (AACRE) is developing a new, affiliated program targeted to prospective students outside the Boston area. In this program, alums will be matched with people in their area who are interested in the MSRED program. We would ask participating alums to meet with the candidate and answer any questions they might have about the Center. If you are interested in participating, please contact Amanda Strong at Amanda.strong@alum.mit.edu .

Alumni/ae Weblog

To allow alumni/ae to connect with one another, announce events, seek career advice, and share business opportunities, CRE has created an Alumni/ae Weblog ( http://amps-tools.mit.edu/cre-alumniblog/). On the weblog, you can find events and information geared to alumni/ae and see what your fellow alumni/ae are doing. Post your own news and comments, or send us your feedback or ideas for the weblog, by e-mailing Joanna Proulx at jbink@mit.edu.

Calling all Europe-based Alumni/ae

Do you work with or have an interest in European Real Estate? A network of Europe-based alumni/ae has formed, and their goal is to develop and expand the real estate network. If you are interested in joining the MIT/CRE European network, e-mail Nick Spencer (CRE '03) with your contact details. Nick can be reached at nspencer@credogroup.com.

Calling all San Francisco-based Alumni/ae

CRE alum Ted Horton ('87), is reaching out to San Francisco-based CRE grads. If you would be interested in "getting together and kicking around deals and ideas while asking questions and offering gratuitous opinions over a glass of wine and some good Italian food" on a monthly or bi-monthly basis, contact Ted at theodorehorton@gmail.com. The group toured a $15 million "Presidio Heights Beaux Arts mansion" on May 18th and dined at Palio in June. Those who attended either or both events reported having a great time.

Regional Alumni/ae Organizations

Regionally based alumni/ae organizations can offer valuable networking and discussion forums for local real estate professionals. If you would like to start or get involved in a CRE alumni/ae group in your area, please contact Lisa Davis at ldavis@ndevelop.com.
