Greetings!
In the tradition of MIT, the Center is committed to bringing to the real estate development process and the real estate industry, the very best that experience and science have to offer, cultivating the enormous potential of the industry to “improve the world by developing better real estate.” This is our vision.
We must harness the vast resources of other disciplines across MIT – planning, design, engineering systems, finance, management and economics – to integrate with our real estate development curriculum and research. We must reach out to and partner with industry to build their trust and commitment. Our curricular focus, our research focus, our cultivation of our alumni – are all part of our dedication to this vision.
December is traditionally a month in which you reflect on the year that has past as you look forward to the year ahead. One thing we plan to do is to continuously articulate our vision (“improve the world by developing better real estate”) because our alumni/ae, our enduring partners, are a key component of that vision. Their importance is reflected by their contributions. While the calendar year starts in January, our year begins in September and as we look to the New Year, we would like to say “thank you” to all of the alumni/ae who have made the fall of 2006 outstanding:
I hope I have not missed anyone. If I have, please accept my apologies. Our alums have not only made a difference, they have made all the difference between the best that experience and science have to offer and the "very best." You are helping us to “cultivate the enormous potential of the industry to improve the world by developing better real estate.”
Thank you and Happy Holidays!
Greetings!
Graduation weekend was a great success. Many of the activities were webcast and can be viewed online (keep an eye out for a podcast version!). This newsletter covers the following topics:
Alums, current students, and graduating students and their friends and family joined to learn something new, re-affirm bonds, and celebrate the graduation of the Class of 2006. A number of presentations were planned as part of the graduation celebration. A detailed list can be found on the Graduation Weekend web page. A webcast of the Friday activities is posted as well.
On Friday, September 29th, Prof. Richard de Neufville of MIT's Civil and Environmental Engineering Department presented the audience with a discussion on "Valuing Flexibility". Prof. M. Phillip Thompson of the Department of Urban Studies and Planning enlightened the audience about the process of "Rebuilding New Orleans". And three members of the Class of 2006 shared their insights from their thesis work -- Harris Morrison, Arvind Pai, and Kristin Wang; all three theses are on MITREX.
Speaking of thesis work, the Alumni Association of the Center for Real Estate (AACRE) granted its second thesis award! Jong Yoon Lim and Yi Zhang have been awarded the 2006 AACRE Thesis Award for their joint thesis "A Study on Real Estate Derivatives." In their thesis, Messrs. Lim and Zhang found that derivatives can help real estate investors implement various strategies including hedging against market risk, asset allocation, sector rebalancing, international diversification and portable Alpha. Their thesis was chosen from eight nominations, and the authors will split the $1,500 award. You can find it on MITREX.
Mr. Matthew Kelly, Vice President of Real Estate Strategy and Development for Walt Disney Imagineering (WDI) was the keynote speaker for the graduation of the Center's 22nd MSRED class. Mr. Kelly urged the graduated to create a vision for the communities they develop and to leave a positive, lasting legacy. (Matt Kelly Story)
About 40 alums and guests attended the Class Reunion dinner for the Classes of 1986 and 1996. The dinner was kicked off by Maria Vieira who welcomed everyone. Maria has the distinction of knowing every graduate of the program. Following Maria were Chairman Tony Ciochetti and AACRE President, Amanda Strong. Tony talked about his upcoming travels to Tokyo, San Francisco and the UK, travels that include meetings with alums; and Amanda Strong, welcomed the alums and encouraged them to get involved in the AACRE. The evening was closed by Prof. Bill Wheaton who "quizzed the students" on market appreciation in real terms. The group passed with flying colors and Bill announced, "A's for all!"
The Center for Real Estate is hosting an Open Housing for its Master of Science in Real Estate Development program. Participants will be given the opportunity to speak with the current class as well as alumni, faculty, and staff. If you know people who would be good candidates for the program, please encourage them to attend the Open House or an information session in their area.
November 17, 2006
The Center for Real Estate is working with the Department of Urban Studies and Planning and Harvard's Graduate School of Design to produce a program called "Bursting with Real Estate". The program is scheduled for Friday, November 17th, and the event will be held at MIT in the Bush Room . Bursting with Real Estate is structured as a series of panels followed by small, round table discussions with a group of students. Each panelist has about 10 minutes to give a general overview of his or her company, job, or employment history. Following the panel, each panelist moves to a round table and engages in 30 minutes of discussion with a group of students. For the last three years we have had 60 to 70 graduate students participate in this event. We welcome alumni/ae participation. If you would like more information, contact Marion Cunningham.
About 20 CRE alums are scheduled to attend the Urban Land Institute's Fall meeting in Denver, CO. Joining these graduates will be 25 members of the Class of 2007. While in Denver, Randy Nichols, current Spaulding Award winner and member of the MIT/CRE Class of 1989, has agreed to provide students and alums a tour of his project, Clayton Lane. Details are below:
The Nichols Partnership is hosting a reception and tour of Clayton Lane for the CRE students (along with the Colorado University real estate program students) on Thursday October 19 starting immediately after a ULI session on “careers in real estate” that Michael Buckley is hosting. ...CRE alums are certainly welcome to attend.
If you are interested in attending, contact Randy at rnichols@nicholspartnership.com so he can get an accurate count for the reception.
Attention all alumni! The AACRE needs volunteers. We are looking for people interested in helping out with membership, programming events, and in particular need a treasurer for the current board. Email Amanda Strong at

Prof. de Neufville is a Professor of Environmental and Civil Engineering in the Engineering Systems Division. "His research and teaching now focuses on inserting flexibility into the design of technological systems. Major industrial and government projects show that the use of "real options", enabling managers to react to unanticipated events, significantly increases overall expected performance. This work implies a fundamental shift in the engineering design paradigm, from a focus on fixed specifications, to a concern with system performance under the broad range of situations that could occur." (ESD Faculty web site)
"Phil Thompson is an urban planner and political scientist. He received a B.A. in Sociology from Harvard University in 1977, a M.U.P. from Hunter College in 1986, and a PhD. in Political Science from the City University of New York Graduate Center in 1990. Phil worked as Deputy General Manager of the New York Housing Authority, and as Director of the Mayor's Office of Housing Coordination, and also as the principle mayoral liaison to the 1991 New York City Council Re-Districting Commission." (IDG faculty website)
"Since the fall of 2005, Prof. Thompson and DUSP graduate students William Bradshaw (CRE '05) and Leigh Graham have been working with community groups, churches and labor unions in New Orleans to plan recovery from the floods that followed the hurricane." The Center for Real Estate would like to invite members of the Classes of 1986 and 1996 to attend a special dinner in their honor as part of the Center's Graduation Weekend. It has been a decade or more since you were students at the Center and a lot has changed. Over the last three years, the CRE has leveraged its home at one of the premier institutes of technology by pursuing cutting edge research that produces practical, yet innovative, tools that are relevant to housing policy, real estate investment, and commercial development. We are proud to have graduation as an opportunity to showcase our alums (you!), our students, and our faculty. While here, we invite you to partake in the graduation activities. All activities are free of charge.

Mr. Kelly will be the 22nd speaker to deliver the MIT/CRE Commencement address since the Center's inception in 1983. Other recent presenters have included Nori Gerardo Lietz, Managing Director and co-founder of Pension Consulting Alliance, and Dr. Hong-Bin Kang, Vice-Mayor of the Seoul Metropolitan Government and onetime President of the Seoul Development Institute.
Graduation weekend for MIT's Center for Real Estate kicks off with a reception on Friday, Sept. 29 at the MIT Faculty Club. The graduation ceremony itself will be held at the Ray and Maria Stata Center on Saturday, September 30, 2006.
Please join us in welcoming Christina Gomes to the MIT Center for Real Estate. Christina is the new Industry Liaison and Assistant to the Chairman.
Christina has a varied and exciting background as a producer, Assistant to the Executive Vice President with Miramax Films, and entrepreneur. As a businessperson she was the owner of a business specializing in organization and relocation. We look forward to leveraging her production, organizational, and administrative skills on behalf of the Center for Real Estate.
The MIT Center for Real Estate Summer Institute of Professional Development Courses helps practitioners supplement their knowledge of the field and learn innovative new approaches. Courses on real estate design, development, finance, and investment are taught on the MIT campus by faculty and industry experts during June and July.
This year, by popular demand, CRE added new courses on Advanced Real Estate Development, Entrepreneurship, and Brownfields. A total of 380 people attended this summer's Professional Development Courses, a 65% increase over last year.
For more information on CRE's Professional Development Courses, please see http://web.mit.edu/cre/conted/index.html.
The MIT Center for Real Estate hosts a "Real Deals" lecture series, in which an established industry professional presents an insider's look at an actual real estate deal. Our students find the series to be an invaluable introduction to the day-to-day workings of real estate acquisition, development, construction, and finance.
If you would be interested in presenting a "Real Deal," please contact Marion Cunningham at marionoc@mit.edu.
Please see the CRE Events page (http://web.mit.edu/cre/events/index.html) for updates and further information.
News and Updates
Under the guidance of recent CRE alum Abe Menzin (CRE '06), the AACRE is starting a new program. During the January Independent Activities Period (IAP), we will be offering externship opportunities to interested students. Patterned after the parent organization's program, but tailored for real estate, the Externship Program gives students the opportunity to explore companies and new areas of focus within the real estate industry.
If you have a project that you think a student would find of interest or if your firm would be willing to give a current student the opportunity to tour various divisions within the organization during IAP, January 8 - February 2, 2007, contact Marion Cunningham at marionoc@mit.edu.
In 2003, a current student was the catalyst for the creation of the Center's Student Host Program. The Program allows prospective students to visit MIT and the Center, meet students and faculty, and attend classes. Current students host prospective students and share their experiences and offer advice about the program.
Drawing on this history, the Alumni Association of the CRE (AACRE) is developing a new, affiliated program targeted to prospective students outside the Boston area. In this program, alums will be matched with people in their area who are interested in the MSRED program. We would ask participating alums to meet with the candidate and answer any questions they might have about the Center. If you are interested in participating, please contact Amanda Strong at Amanda.strong@alum.mit.edu .

If you have a project that you think a student would find of interest or if your firm would be willing to give a current student the opportunity to tour various units within the organization during IAP, January 8 - February 2, 2007, contact Marion Cunningham at marionoc@mit.edu.
If you are interested in participating, please contact Amanda Strong at Amanda.strong@alum.mit.edu.
Two members of the CRE Class of 2003, Jeff Hutchinson and Forrest Westin, were recently quoted in The San Francisco Chronicle and The New York Times in articles discussing cooling housing markets.
To allow alumni/ae to connect with one another, announce events, seek career advice, and share business opportunities, CRE has created an Alumni/ae Weblog (http://amps-tools.mit.edu/cre-alumniblog/). On the weblog, you can find events and information geared to alumni/ae and see what your fellow alumni/ae are doing. Post your own news and comments, or send us your feedback or ideas for the weblog, by emailing Karen MacArthur at macarthr@mit.edu.
Do you work with or have an interest in European Real Estate? A network of Europe-based alumni/ae has formed, and their goal is to develop and expand the real estate network. If you are interested in joining the MIT/CRE European network, e-mail Nick Spencer (CRE '03) with your contact details. Nick can be reached at nspencer@credogroup.com.
CRE alum Ted Horton ('87), is reaching out to San Francisco-based CRE grads. If you would be interested in "getting together and kicking around deals and ideas while asking questions and offering gratuitous opinions over a glass of wine and some good Italian food" on a monthly or bi-monthly basis, contact Ted at theodorehorton@gmail.com. The group toured a $15 million "Presidio Heights Beaux Arts mansion" on May 18th and had a great time.
Regionally based alumni/ae organizations can offer valuable networking and discussion forums for local real estate professionals. If you would like to start or get involved in a CRE alumni/ae group in your area, please contact Lisa Davis at ldavis@ndevelop.com.

Greetings!]]>
The CRE Partners Meeting was held on April 5 – 6, 2006. Invited speakers addressed the topic “Powering the Future? through topics as diverse as global systems models, energy politics, and the use of energy from coal, hydrogen, and nuclear fusion. Participants learned about cutting edge energy technologies by touring the Sloan Automotive Laboratory, the Alcator C-Mod Tokamak at MIT’s Plasma Fusion Center, and the MIT Reactor.
One partner representative who had traveled from China for the meeting commented that the conference was particularly valuable because it “opened up our horizons and made us think outside of the box? about energy use and how it will affect real estate development. Another participant said that the presentations convinced her that if you “create the right incentives, innovation will happen.?
The meeting concluded with roundtable discussions of what these energy technologies mean for the Real Estate industry, and how they might affect the participants’ organizations over the next five years.

CRE will be holding a Partners Meeting on April 5-6, 2006. The topic of the meeting is “Powering the Future,? and discussion will focus on energy and its impact on the built environment.
At this meeting, CRE’s Partners will gain insight into ways in which energy technology and resources will affect the real estate industry. We recognize that this conference is different from the traditional real estate conference. Indeed, by design, we are seeking to move beyond the traditional boundaries of the real estate industry to examine other areas that impact and influence what our Partners do as real estate practitioners. Without a doubt, energy is having a huge impact on the built environment, which gave rise to this topic.
Speakers will include David Goldwyn, previously an Assistant Secretary of Energy for the U.S. at the United Nations, who will provide an overview of the geopolitical landscape, economist Henry Jacoby of MIT’s Sloan School, and Jón Björn Skúlason, who will speak about Iceland’s transformation into a hydrogen-based economy. Meeting participants will learn about innovative energy technologies at the Sloan Automotive Laboratory and MIT’s Plasma Fusion Center.
The meeting is open to CRE Industry Partners and special guests only. For more information, please see http://web.mit.edu/cre/events/events/partners-meeting-06.html. .
The Heather Smith Memorial Fellowship is awarded every year to a female graduate student at the MIT Center for Real Estate. The fellowship was established to honor and remember Heather Smith, who was a member of the Boston real estate community and the fiancée of Mike Jammen, CRE Class of 1997. Heather was aboard American Airlines Flight 11 on September 11, 2001.
An awards dinner and benefit fundraiser were held on February 27, 2006, and attended by Heather Smith’s family and friends, members of New England Women in Real Estate (NEWIRE), and industry professionals.
The recipient of this year’s award is Amy Merritt, CRE Class of 2006. Before coming to MIT, she worked in an urban redevelopment firm specializing in mixed-use New Urbanist infill projects in Atlanta, Georgia. Amy is the seventh recipient of the award.
Our students are beginning to consider topics for thesis research during the coming summer. We’re interested in your proposals for thesis topics.
The master’s thesis is typically 60-100 pages in length, a tightly focused piece of research which must be completed in only three months. Theses can use corporate data, but should involve issues of general interest to the industry. Past theses have included academic topics, pedagogical topics, case studies, and feasibility analyses.
Topic proposals should be about a page in length, and contain a clear question or problem, proposed methodology, and an estimate of the support you can provide for the student. Proposals need to be received by early April in order to be reviewed and considered by the faculty for this year’s students. Please send your proposals to Maria Vieira, Associate Director of Education, 617-258-5672 (phone), mvieira@mit.edu, or fax to: 617-258-6991.
